Downtown Tempe

Steeped in history, downtown Tempe, Arizona, boasts a vibrant energy. Originally called Hayden's Ferry, it was renamed Tempe in 1879, inspired by the Vale of Tempe in Greece. The arrival of the railway system spurred growth, and today, Tempe thrives as a separate city bordering Phoenix. The lively Mill Avenue District serves as the heart of downtown, offering a diverse mix of shops, restaurants, music venues, and art installations. With Arizona State University nearby, the area pulsates with a youthful energy, but caters to a wider range of interests. From cultural attractions to outdoor recreation on Tempe Town Lake, downtown Tempe offers something for everyone.

Hackett House

Tucked inside a historic bakery built in 1888, is a quaint shop of handmade collectibles. Filled with dolls, ornaments and knick-knacks, all proceeds from this "volunteer only" store go to support the Sister City Fund. This organization sends Tempe high school students abroad each year to experience new cultures, and it funds the teacher exchange with its sister cities. In return, the students then host visitors from other countries shopping here. It supports a worthwhile cause, so stop by, browse and help, as was once said, bring the world together...one friendship at a time.
