An offshoot of the the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, the Cold Spring Harbor was established in 1880 as a fish hatchery and by the end of the 19th-century a marine biology center was formed. Properties of the old Cold Spring Whaling Company were given to the institution which soon became a pioneer in genetic research. Today Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is one of the forerunners on genomic, cancer, bioinformatics and neurobiology, and has had Nobel laureates working for them. CSHL offers a one-and-a-half hour guided tour that offers a glimpse of the lab's history. The walking tour is of grounds of the lab. The main campus spreads across 120 acres (48.56 hectares) of beautiful shoreline and features historic buildings. CSHL also hosts annual concerts and regular lecture programs where the public is welcome.
