The historic Fort Yellowstone was established at the end of the 19th Century to house the US Army. The US Army was stationed at the Yellowstone National Park until 1916, to protect the park, the animals, and visitors from violators. In addition to its protective role, the fort served as a hub for scientific research, with Army personnel supporting various research projects within the park. Many of the buildings that were erected in the fort exist even today and are used as museums, offices, chapel, staff quarters and stables. Visit the fort to learn about the park’s historic past and if you are lucky, you might be able to even spot an elk or two from a distance.

Settlement in Castle Town began around 1884 when silver was discovered in the region. Owing to the mining activities, this town was in its peak home to two thousand people. North Carolina Mine and Cumberland Mine were two of the biggest names in the mining industry that set up their base at Castle. Once all the mining activities were completed, residents of Castle Town moved out making it a ghost town.
