Mining is the part of industry engaged in exploring and removing minerals from the earth. It is the oldest and most important occupation in that it makes available raw materials for much of the world and together with agriculture is the nerve center of civilization. Exemplar of the room and pillar method of mining, the Widow Jane Mine is one of a handful of mines in Rosendale that are horizontal as opposed to most mines that follow the limestone seam from almost right angles.
