Picayune Strand State Forest

Picayune Strand State Forest has a curious history beginning in the 1940s. Originally land used for logging, the thousands of acres that make up the forest became part of the "swampland in Florida" scam of the 1960s. After many years and millions of dollars, the Save Our Everglades began acquiring back the land and restoring it, a large federal grant being given to help assist in this process in 1998. Today. endangered species like the rare Florida panther make their home in this protected ecosystem. Hiking, biking and equestrian trails wind through the forest. Groves of century-old cypress trees, fragrant pine flatlands and prairies, crisscrossed with streams and ponds invite exploration, make it ideal for nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers.

Vanderbilt Beach

Close by the swanky shops, restaurants and hotels in North Naples, Vanderbilt Beach is a prime location for those who want to escape the glitz and glamour of town. There is plenty of vehicle parking available along Vanderbilt Beach Road, but the umbrellas and picnic baskets on the sand grow fast so be sure to arrive early. Also present are restrooms and showers, a concession stand, bicycles racks, and beach equipment rentals. The beach is open from 8a everyday until sunset.

Royal Palm Hammock

This small town, located within Collier Seminole State Park, is an historic landmark. It is characterized by a modest outcropping of majestic trees on a modest little hill amongst acres and acres of marshland. Early explorers counted on it the way even earlier explorers counted on the North Star. Trails accessible here lead into the wily depths of the Everglades.
