Collect Pond Park

Collect Pond Park sits upon what was once a large, 60-ft. pond fed by an underground water source. When the city was established by Dutch settlers in the early 17th Century, the waters were used for recreation and it remained this way until the late 18th Century. However, the city outgrew this now minuscule water supply and the pond fell into disuse and garnered a reputation as a garbage-infested cesspool. The Collect thereby became fetid and in 1811, the city finally finished filling it in. When the waters were drained, the city created Canal Street, the popular thoroughfare that cuts through the lower part of the island. Today, the park is a small slice of refuge in the busy urban jungle.
