The Presidio San Luis de las Amarillas, also known as the Presidio of San Sabá, was built in 1757 and occupies approximately 15.5 acres (6.3 hectares) of highly strategic territory. Situated in the heart of Menard, Texas, these formidable brick fortifications were originally built to protect the Mission Santa Cruz de San Sabá from the various indigenous tribes that lived near the area. The Presidio provided aid when the Mission was attacked by the Comanche and Wichita people in 1758, and then participated in the ill-fated retaliatory attack about a year later. The site was officially abandoned by the Spaniards in 1770. The San Saba Silver Mines are one of the unmissable sights here.
