Thankfully, you won't be starting your research from scratch. We evaluated 19 local moving companies in South Bend, scoring them on criteria like licensing and insurance, customer reviews, Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditations and ratings , compliance with local laws and more. We also called our highest-scoring companies to get an estimate, posing as a potential customer in order to get the true customer experience.

Top South Bend movers

The best moving company in South Bend for YOU

While we stand by every mover featured on this list, the best mover for you will depend on your individual needs and budget. If storage is necessary, consider companies that offer storage services. If you have specialty items or antiques that need extra care, such as a piano or a delicate china cabinet, look for movers experienced in handling those belongings. If budget is your top concern, contact multiple moving companies and compare estimates to find the best deal. We recommend reaching out to at least three movers before making your final decision.

Prime Packers is our No. 1 pick for the best mover in South Bend. It's a family-owned company that handles local and long-distance moves, as well as packing and labor-only services. What we really appreciated was its price transparency. All pricing information can be found directly on the company's website , which is a rare sight in the moving industry. To move our three-bedroom house locally within South Bend, we were quoted an hourly rate of $190 per hour for three movers and a 26-foot truck. There's also a travel charge of between $140 and $250, dependent on distance, and you'll only need to pay a deposit fee for commercial or long-distance moves.

Immediate Movers and Storage is another option we recommend for great local movers in the area. Along with the standard local and long-distance moving jobs, you can hire them for a bunch of other services too, like packing, storage, specialty item moving and more. For three movers and a 26-foot truck, you'll pay $205 per hour. There's also a flat travel fee for local moves ($153) and different deposit amounts depending on the number of trucks you need.

Prime Packers is still a relatively fresh business, having been founded in 2021. It's a family-owned company that performs local and long-distance moves, as well as providing packing and labor-only services. We called Prime Packers to get an estimate to move our three-bedroom, 1,400-square-foot house within South Bend. But it turns out we didn't even need to call. The company is completely transparent about how much each service costs, with a pricing breakdown page easily accessible from its website.

When we called for our estimate, we got to speak with Alvin Mawuntu, the business owner. Alvin was friendly and eager to answer all of our questions. The best part about the estimate process is just how quick it is. Unlike many other moving companies, you don't need to provide an inventory of your belongings. Prime Packers jumps right into what you need and how much it's going to cost right up front.

Services offered

  • Local moving

  • Long-distance moving

  • Packing services

  • Loading and unloading

Alvin recommended a three-person crew for our move and one truck, which would cost $190 per hour. An additional mover is an extra $30 per hour. You'll also pay a flat travel fee between $140 and $250, depending on the distance between the pickup and drop-off locations. Heavy and specialty items like gun safes, pool tables and hot tubs will also require an extra charge to be moved. The cost of packing services matches their local moving rate plus the cost of supplies ($10 to $250).

Since there's a two-hour minimum for moving jobs, you should expect to pay at least $520 for moving services with a three-person crew. The company doesn't charge a deposit to book a local move, but it does charge a deposit of $100 to $250 for long-distance and commercial moves. You make payments with cash, card or check. Just note that there's a 3.6% processing fee for credit and debit card transactions. And while the company does work with some contractors, we were told that the majority of the crew are full-time, background-checked employees.

Prime Packers is a BBB-accredited business with an A+ rating and no complaints on file. It has a perfect five-star review score on both Google (302 reviews) and Yelp (20 reviews).

The business is located at 311 Mars Street, Berrien Springs, Mich., 49103. Business hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and Sunday, and it's closed on Saturdays. You can call 269-259-8804 or visit the company's website to get an estimate.

We were particularly impressed with the company's price transparency, with a detailed pricing breakdown available right on their website. This is very uncommon in the moving industry, so this was nice to see. You won't need to pay a deposit for local moves, but there is a travel charge, as well as an extra fee to move specialty items.

Immediate Movers & Storage has been moving families and businesses across the state of Indiana for 10 years. The company performs local and long-distance moves, and can help with packing, storage, specialty item moving, white-glove delivery services and more.

We called the business to get an estimate for a local move for a three-bedroom house. During our phone call, we spoke with Sarah, a sales representative with the company, who was knowledgeable about the offered services and happy to assist. To kick off the quote process, you'll be asked a few questions about your property, and you'll need to provide a full inventory of your belongings, which we did over the phone. The inventory listing process was long and in-depth. We were on a call for nearly 35 minutes, so be sure you have plenty of time set aside before starting the estimation process.

We were told our move would likely cost between $1,849 and $2,400. This price range includes the hourly rate for three movers ($205 per hour), one 26-foot truck, travel and fuel costs ($153.75), TV boxes, mattress bags, tools for the job and protective padding for doorframes and banisters. If four movers and two trucks are needed, the hourly rate goes up to $275 per hour. There's also an extra charge to move items like gun safes, pianos, hot tubs and pool tables.

Services offered

  • Local and long-distance moving

  • Packing services

  • Storage

  • Heavy and specialty item moving

  • White-glove delivery

Deposit costs are dependent on how many trucks you need. To book one truck, you'll pay $150, and for two trucks, it'll cost $300. Your deposit is fully refundable as long as you cancel at least 72 hours before your scheduled move date. There's a two-hour minimum for moving jobs, so with that in mind, expect to spend a minimum of $713 for a move with three crew.

Payments can be made with cash, card or ACH. There aren't any processing or convenience fees when paying with a credit or debit card, which is nice. We were also told that everyone on the moving crew is a full-time employee who must pass training and a background check before going out on their first job.

Immediate Movers and Storage is a BBB-accredited business with an A+ rating and no filed complaints. It has a 4.9-star rating on Google (366 reviews) and a 2.2-star rating on Yelp (five reviews). The business is located at 10544 State Road 39, La Porte, Ind., 46350 and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It's closed on Sundays. BLVD Moving is the best national moving company

The BLVD Moving crew poses for a group photo

The BLVD Moving crew poses for a group photo

At Yahoo Local, we aim to highlight the best local businesses, but we also recognize that national moving companies can sometimes be the better option, especially for long-distance moves. After reviewing several national providers, we selected BLVD Moving as the top choice on our list of best national moving companies . For a detailed breakdown of how to decide, see our guide to comparing local and national movers .

BLVD Moving is run by professionals with decades of relocation experience. While the company operates only four offices in California, it provides both local and long-distance services nationwide. Family-owned and independent, BLVD manages its own trucks and moving staff, though its policies state that subcontractors or agents may occasionally be used. This is a common practice in the industry during periods of high demand, but it's worth keeping in mind.

We requested a quote from BLVD for a 500-mile move involving approximately 1,340 cubic feet of belongings, which is about the size of a typical three-bedroom household without major appliances. The company quoted around $6,700, which is consistent with rates from other long-distance movers. To confirm a booking, BLVD requires a 33% deposit, with 50% of the remaining balance due at pickup and the final payment upon delivery.

Services offered

  • Local moves

  • Long-distance moves

  • Residential, office and commercial moves

  • Packing services

  • Storage

  • Financing

For cancellations, BLVD refunds deposits if notice is given at least two business days before pickup. Delivery timeframes range from two to 21 business days, depending on distance. The clock starts from the preferred delivery date you select, which means shipments could take just over a month if scheduled at the longer end of the window.

BLVD recommends reserving your move at least 30 days in advance, and even earlier during peak periods such as summer or the beginning and end of the month. The quote process is simple, offering virtual walkthroughs or an online inventory form for quicker estimates. Financing options are also available, with qualifying customers eligible for interest rates starting at 0%.

BLVD Moving is accredited by the BBB with a B rating and has 92 complaints on record. While that figure may appear high, it is typical for large national movers. Customer reviews show a 4.3-star rating on Google (1,250 reviews) and a 2.3-star average on Yelp (369 reviews). All movers are direct employees who undergo background checks.

BLVD's main office is located at 21622 Plummer St., Chatsworth, Calif., 91311. Business hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. To request a quote, call 844-274-0500 or visit the company's website .

Indiana moving FAQs

What info should you have when requesting an estimate?

What movers require to create an estimate can vary depending on the company and how detailed their pricing process is. Some will ask for basics like your home's square footage, number of bedrooms and the pick-up and drop-off locations. Others won't provide a final quote until they've reviewed a complete list of the items you plan to move .

At minimum, be prepared to share the dimensions of your current and new homes, the exact addresses and any oversize or specialty belongings that may require extra care. Many moving companies charge additional fees for items that exceed certain weight limits, so providing these details upfront helps you avoid unexpected costs. You should also note if there are stairs or elevators at either property, as movers often apply surcharges for those situations.

What should you know about packing and storage in Indiana?

Indiana experiences all four seasons, though its climate tends to be on the colder side. In South Bend, average summer highs range from 79 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter lows drop to about 17 degrees Fahrenheit in January, according to U.S. Climate Data .

Items such as electronics, art supplies, synthetic fabrics, cosmetics and medications are vulnerable to damage from extreme temperatures. To protect them, it's best to transport these belongings in a climate-controlled vehicle. If storage is needed, paying extra for an indoor or climate-regulated unit is a smart investment.

What's different about condo and apartment moving in Indiana?

When moving into or out of an apartment or condo , it's likely you'll need to climb stairs. Many movers charge extra for carrying belongings up multiple flights, and some also apply fees for elevator use. In some cases, companies base pricing on the total number of steps climbed, though policies vary by mover. You may not be billed for a single flight of stairs, but if your unit is on the third floor or higher, there's a good chance you'll face an added cost.

Do you need moving permits or licenses to move in Indiana?

Yes, Indiana moving companies that transport household goods for hire within state lines must obtain proper licensing through the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR), specifically with the Motor Carrier Services Division. Movers must apply for Indiana Intrastate Operating Authority and get a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity to operate their business within the state.

For more details, check out our in-depth guide on Indiana's moving company licensing and regulations .

How much should you tip movers in Indiana?

A standard guideline for tipping movers is to tip between 10% and 20% of your total moving cost . This applies to both local and long-distance moves. That said, tipping is optional. It's simply a way to show appreciation. If the service doesn't meet your expectations, you're under no obligation to leave a tip.
