Handy Plumbing Man tops our list of the best plumbers serving San Jose for a reason. The San Carlos, Calif.-based company has earned a stellar reputation in the greater San Jose area for its comprehensive service to both residential and commercial addresses, transparent pricing and speed.

We called Handy Plumbing Man on a weekday morning to ask about pricing and availability to fix a clogged shower drain. There's no cost for the visit or the estimate, and a written estimate is provided before any work begins.

Fixes for a clogged drain are generally covered for 30 or 60 days, depending on the specifics of the work performed — the plumber on site can confirm for how long the given case will be covered.

California plumbing FAQs

How do I know if my water heater needs repairs or a full replacement?

No hot water (or steadily less hot water) is the first sign many people notice when their hot water heater is in need of repair or replacement, but it's not the only clue. Pooling water leaking from your heater, visible corrosion on the tank, rusty water or water with an odd taste coming from the tap can all signify that your water heater needs attention, and so can odd banging or popping noises. While some issues can be fixed with a repair, sometimes replacing the whole unit (especially if it's older than 10 years old) can be the most cost-effective fix. For more information, check out our guide to surefire signs you need to replace your water heater .

How long does a water heater typically last in California?

In general, when you install a new conventional water heater, you can expect eight to 12 years of service, or more than 20 years with a tankless model. Because California's water tends to be hard (meaning it has a heavier-than-average mineral content), flushing your tank annually can help keep your heater functioning better for longer.

What are the most common issues people call plumbers to fix?

While some plumbing problems can be fixed with a little know-how, some issues need a professional touch. Clogged drains, clogged toilets, issues with water heaters, and leaks of all kinds are the most frequent reasons people call plumbers to fix. Other reasons include water line breaks, septic system issues, sump pump problems and pipe issues are other common issues .

How can I tell if I can fix a plumbing issue myself or if I should call a pro?

Smaller, frequently occurring issues like clogged drains, a running toilet or caulk that needs to be redone can generally be tackled with a little research and some DIY plumbing tools . That being said, for larger jobs or issues that have an easy-to-see problem or an easy-to-diagnose solution may be a better fit for a professional plumber .

Is it better to go with a smaller plumbing company or a larger one?

Different companies have different strengths. Some homeowners prefer working with smaller, locally owned firms because they find them more responsive and vested in delivering good service in their communities. Others prefer the convenience of a bigger company with more locations and employees, and potentially better access to specialized equipment. Ultimately, you should choose a company that has expertise in your issue at prices that fit your budget with the qualities you value, and company size is just one factor to consider.

Do plumbing companies in California need to be licensed?

Plumbers operating in California need to have a C-36 Plumbing Contractor license issued by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) to perform any work valued at more than $1,000. You can check and see if a plumber is licensed using the Check a License page on the CSLB website. Read our guide to California plumbing license laws and regulations .

Do all reputable plumbers do background checks?

Since plumbers work inside your home, it's normal to wonder if they've been vetted. While many companies do formal background checks on their employees as a security measure that protects both their clients and themselves, not all do. Many businesses, especially smaller or family businesses, don't run background checks, especially if they employ mostly family members or long-time associates. If you prefer that only workers who have passed a background check be on the premises during work, ask the plumbing company about their policy when you call.

Do plumbers usually charge by the hour or flat rate?

It depends! There's no one industry standard. Some plumbers charge exclusively by the hour, and some have set rates for set jobs. Others will charge some jobs (in our experience, often the smaller or less complicated ones) at a flat rate and charge hourly for others. And while some plumbers will assess your issue for free, many will charge a service call fee for coming to your house, whether you use their services or not, although some will apply the service fee to any work you have done if you choose to work with them.

Should plumbers provide written estimates before beginning a job?

In short, yes. You should always know the scope of work you've agreed to, and the costs that will be associated with the work, and good plumbers will provide this in writing before any work is begun.

Do plumbers usually offer warranties? And if so, what kind?

In our experience, most plumbers offer warranties for their work, but not always for all work. While services like the installation of new fixtures or features like sump pumps, toilets, or hot water heaters are usually covered for both materials and workmanship, fixes to existing problems (like clogged drains or leaking faucets) may not be covered — or are covered in more limited ways or for a shorter period of time.
