The Buttered Tin, located on 7th Street East, is a local bakery and cafe, opened in June 2013. They offer a wide range of baked delights, prepared from the freshest of locally sourced products and choicest of ingredients. Patrons can watch culinary experts Alicia Hinze and Peter Domenick bake sinful desserts, breads and more, through their open kitchen. The ambiance is quite inviting and the friendly staff makes your visit absolutely delightful. Their Banana Foster French Toast, Chocolate Chip and Sugar Cookies, Peanut Butter Blossom cup cakes are recommended by many. Flavors are practically endless and equally mouthwatering. This down to earth restaurant serves up home cooking at its best. The original restaurant on Raymond Avenue opened in 1973 and always has a line waiting for breakfast. And since breakfast is served throughout the day, the place always seems to be packed. The customary breakfast staples can be found here, along with a few surprises, including a Mexican Omelet and Bran Apple Walnut Pancakes. Lunch offers meatloaf and potatoes and roast beef, grilled pork chops, liver with onions and bacon and other comfort foods make patrons feel right at home. Soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers are also served at lunch and dinner. There are a number of locations throughout the Twin Cities. Hearty egg and potato dishes accompany a wide selection of fresh bread. As you might expect, the Day by Day Cafe doesn't serve alcohol, but you certainly won't miss it with the nice, strong Dunn Bros. Coffee flows freely for the price of a single cup. The dining room is spacious, brick-lined and decorated with unique art. During the summer months, the back patio is open for a remarkably pleasant experience, but get there early on weekends to avoid crowds. Dinner is also served on weekdays. Early-rising or nocturnal locals get there before 7am for the Very Early Bird special, but prices are reasonable all day. Cash or cheque only.
Highland Grill is a friendly, neighbourhood joint with flair. Find a spot in a booth or at the old-fashioned lunch counter. The menu boasts that everything is made from scratch, and after tasting the simple fare, you will swear it is just like mom used to make. Breakfasts are hearty and include French toast, stacks of cakes with fruit toppings, Eggs Benedict and combos with eggs, toast, hash browns, bacon and sausage. At lunch or dinner, huge salads are served with fresh bread and sweet potato fries. Soups go great with the juicy burgers, Cajun chicken melt, ginger chicken pesto pasta and salmon cakes. Finish it off with the apple crisp or chocolate raspberry tart.
