Local in source, Texan in spirit, not only in the kitchen, but in the community, is what Jack Allen's Kitchen is all about. Since 2009, our restaurant has been bringing Southern-inspired flavors infused with the spice of Southwestern cuisine to the Austin area. Chef and owner Jack Allen Gilmore's dedication to local farmers and purveyors yields us the best from each season. Texas' rich history and abundant local bounty serves as our daily inspiration, and it is our great honor to bring that directly to your table.
When in and around the Austin campus of the University of Texas, head to the lovely Carillon. Chef Josh Watkins combines his classical training and creative instinct to re-define American classics showcased on imaginative platters. The fare is influenced by molecular gastronomy and boasts dishes like Hamachi crudo, miso marinaded mero and escolar. Dine beneath the arches, amidst antique chandeliers and elegant accents that are a classic example of the university's remarkable architecture.
24 Diner
24 is the quintessential American diner, only far more upscale than those from the 1950s that it gets its inspiration from. Open 24 hours a day all week (except Wednesdays), the eatery is located across the famous Waterloo Records store. Texan chef Andrew Curren designs a menu that advocates the farm-to-fork philosophy and features a contemporary take on timeless favorites like chicken and waffles, burgers and milkshakes. Complement the organic fare with their impressive beer and wine list. Lively banter, modern decor and infectious vibes keep patrons revisiting.
Top Notch
When you are on your way to Top Notch, don't be surprised if you have a déjà vu moment. It's probably because you're recalling Matthew McConaughey and his buddies having their burgers and fries at this very place in 'Dazed and Confused'. Top Notch is probably one of the fewest places to have an indoor charcoal grill, which gives their cheeseburgers the added oomph. The fried chicken(with fries and coleslaw on the side) and shrimp is also a local favorite, but neither popularity nor fame can make Top Notch hike their prices. You gotta love them.
