Unconventional Diner serves inspired dishes that blend soulful comfort with haute technique. The menu is studded with imaginative delights that echo the restaurant's name, from French fries with "sexy sauce" to spring rolls with "Franch" dressing to a meatloaf "nothing like anyone's mom's." Chef David Deshaies, a much-praised protege of Michel Richard, is the culinary force behind this highly acclaimed spot in Shaw. Craft beer and cocktails add to the alchemy for diners looking for an entertaining (and delicious) culinary experience.
This social meeting place in the U Street neighborhood caters to the politically and artistically-minded. The gallery at Busboys and Poets features local artists, and events include speakers, poetry readings, live music and film screenings. The atmosphere is perfect for a relaxing afternoon. After lunching with friends over pizza, browse the bookstore, and then snuggle up on the couch with a laptop and a cup of coffee, enjoying the free wireless internet. Busboys and Poets at night has a livelier social scene, featuring music and a full bar.
A Georgetown fixture since the early 1930s, Martin's Tavern leans decisively towards the historical - rather than the trendy - aspect of this neighborhood. The former New York Giants baseball player William G. Martin opened this neighborhood pub in 1933. Today his grandson, Billy Martin runs the family business. Dark wood paneling and touches of hunter green make for an attractive interior. The menu features American and continental classics - steak and seafood as well as pasta served with marinara or alfredo sauces.
Busboys and Poets is a community gathering place. First established in 2005 Busboys and Poets was created by owner Anas "Andy" Shallal, an Iraqi-American artist, activist and restaurateur. After opening, the flagship location at 14th and V Streets, NW (Washington DC), the neighboring residents and the progressive community, embraced Busboys, especially activists opposed to the Iraq War. Busboys and Poets is now located in three distinctive neighborhoods in the Washington Metropolitan area and is a community resource for artists, activists, writers, thinkers and dreamers.
Washington’s Massachusetts Avenue puts up a dining establishment guided by a noble initiative of connecting the crafted food with its source ingredients. Farmers and Distillers’ food and wine are supplied by the North Dakota Farmers Union. The idea is to raise awareness and create respect for the process or food crafting and imparting insight about the supply-chain and keeping the food nourishing, fresh and healthy all along. In a way, they have broken the fare barrier and standardized the rewards everywhere along the process. The organic food, in-house beer, and vodka are one of Washington’s most popular coming from a theme restaurant.
