Eddie Havens is a Graduate Gemologist (GIA), Certified Member of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers and Custom Jeweler. We know there are no federal or state laws regarding qualifications or how and to what standards a personal property appraiser is to perform. Being associatd with a professional appraisal organization, NAJA, we submit to, as a professional personal property appraiser (a) to gain and continually receive education and certifications regarding personal property appraising, specifically fine jewelry and (b) submit to and are held accountable as a professional appraiser. In the fine jewelry appraisal arena it is known that being a gemologist alone does NOT qualify one as an appraiser. Gemology is a fascinating science. A professional appraiser will have credentials to show and represent study in USPAP Rules & Standards, valuation theory, methodology, understanding various markets, compiling research in the most common and appropriate market of trade, understanding various appraisal report types and intended uses; insurance related reports, equitable distribution reports (divorce), equitable distribution regarding settling estates/gifting and the tax consequences that may arise, donation appraisals (tax implications) proper IRS documents that must be filed, etc.
