We know there are no federal or state laws regarding qualifications or how and to what standards a personal property appraiser is to perform. Being associatd with a professional appraisal organization, NAJA, we submit to, as a professional personal property appraiser (a) to gain and continually receive education and certifications regarding personal property appraising, specifically fine jewelry and (b) submit to and are held accountable as a professional appraiser. In the fine jewelry appraisal arena it is known that being a gemologist alone does NOT qualify one as an appraiser. Gemology is a fascinating science. A professional appraiser will have credentials to show and represent study in USPAP Rules & Standards, valuation theory, methodology, understanding various markets, compiling research in the most common and appropriate market of trade, understanding various appraisal report types and intended uses; insurance related reports, equitable distribution reports (divorce), equitable distribution regarding settling estates/gifting and the tax consequences that may arise, donation appraisals (tax implications) proper IRS documents that must be filed, etc.
