In the basement of a converted Old Portland-style home, Taste Tickler makes some of the best hoagies in the city. Interesting ideas like a chicken teriyaki sub are manifested behind the counter, and you will not be disappointed if you give one of these creations a try. Submarine sandwiches come in three lengths: seven inches, 10-inch and 14-inch. Ice cream is also dished up here, and it is the perfect way to complete your lunch. Seating is scarce, so order a sandwich to go and head up to Irving Park for a shaded midday retreat.

Lardo

A brainchild of culinary expert, Rick Gencarelli, Lardo saw humble beginnings as a food cart in 2010. A short while later this wonderful dine-in space was established, so fans of Lardo could sit and enjoy the delicious meat offerings. Located on the eastern bank of Portland's Willamette River, at Lardo Eastside it is all about appetizing sandwiches, richly stuffed with pork and beef. The menu, featuring Korean Pork Shoulder, Pork Meatball Banh Mi and Griddled Mortadella, is sure to please any meat lover. Devil’s Dill is a low-key, no frills sandwich shop. The eatery offers nine signature sandwiches that can be substituted with gluten-free bread. Sandwiches No. 3 made with salami, mortadella, provolone, kale, red onion, balsamic aioli, cherry pepper relish and Sandwich No. 1 made with house smoked five-spice pulled pork, sesame slaw, chili garlic B.B.Q. sauce are particularly good. You can call for one of the numerous side dishes like salads, soup, sauteed kale, pickle or chips for a heartier meal. Wash down the dishes with a San Pellegrino Limonata or a Mexican Coke. Open everyday till 3a, Devil’s Dill serves as the late-night neighborhood joint as well.
