Shorinji Kempo is a comprehensive martial art utilizing punches, strikes, kicks, grabs, escapes, throws, and pressure points to form an effective self-defense art form. The San Francisco Branch has been in existence for more than 30 years in the heart of San Francisco's Japantown. The practice sessions at our dojo emphasize practical self-defense and application of Shorinji Kempo in real world situations. Practice sessions are friendly and non-competitive; all students are encouraged to learn through cooperation and mutual growth.
City Aikido
Aikido, a martial art grounded in a non-violent philosophy, also increases body awareness, energy flow, and ease of movement. There are no contests in Aikido; one trains with a partner, not an opponent. Confronting oneself, connecting with a partner, it is no surprise many people consider aikido a spiritual as well as a martial practice. The teaching staff at City Aikido is the most experienced in the Bay Area. We offer classes 7 days a week, with a schedule that includes morning, noon, and evening sessions. Visitors are encouraged to come in and watch a class, and ask questions of any instructors or students.
Weekly classes for beginning and advanced students in traditional Shotokan Karate Mondays and Wednesdays 7:00pm - 8:30pm. Practice is located at Berkeley's Historic Toverii Tuppa: Finnish Hall in the second floor ballroom. Joining is easy – just visit any of our practices! There is no charge to observe or to practice with us once or twice. Karate can be practiced by people of all ages for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, physical conditioning, and mental fortitude. No special equipment is required.
Beliso Karate School specializes on teaching children. Students range from as young as 4 years old to as old as 19 years old. We pride on stressing discipline, competition and camaraderie all in a fun and engaging atmosphere. All instructors come from within the school and are trained by our head professor. This ensures an unparalleled quality of teaching as well as a coherent philosophy that runs through all our teachers.
