Our style is Cuong Nhu, which means "hard/soft" and is a blend of Shotokan Karate, Wing Chun, Vovinam, Aikido, Judo, Taiji, and boxing. We practice forms, basic techniques and self-defense, grapple, spar, break boards, and train with various weapons. Cuong Nhu is a discipline of the body, mind, and spirit. We have a youth class for ages seven and older, and have an adults class meeting Monday, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
We specialize in one thing: WingChun Self-Defense. 400 years ago, WingChun mixed the best styles of the day. Today, it's evolved into a seamless, user-friendly system. With our special training curriculum, your goals are clear and accessible. The full theory and real practice of WingChun Self-Defense is all open to you. You can join a professional Academy which offers you a part or full-time study at your own pace. Our teaching methods are tailored to you as a unique person. Just come as you are to quickly grasp the functional logic and dynamic action of this movement art. Learn to Defend Yourself.
We offer classes in the Indonesian martial art of Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen. Poekoelan's beautiful, flowing movements are like water and bamboo; fluid and circular, spiraling and continuous, graceful and whip-like. Movement in Poekoelan is inspired by four animals; the tiger, the crane, the monkey, and the snake. Through these animals, we explore the dualities of soft and hard, fast and slow, fierce and playful, and highand low. Each practitioner's movement is beautiful and unique.
Zen Budokai is a modern, self-defense system based on Japanese jujutsu. Our techniques include throws, joint locks, chokes, submission holds, strikes, ground defenses, and non-lethal control techniques. We differ from many Brazilian Jiu-jitsu & MMA schools in that our focus is on self-defense from a standing position as opposed to competition ground fighting. Students learn not only how to defend themselves, but how to control threats (including weapons) and protect others. We have a long history in San Francisco and welcome everyone. There is no macho “gym” culture and no previous experience is required. Come visit a class and see for yourself!
