CLEMSON — Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney announced wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. is out of the hospital but will be out for the season after suffering an injury against SMU .
"Prayers answered, just a blessing, kind of best-scenario," Swinney said Oct. 20. "It was a very, very scary injury, and the doctors did an amazing job. ... A lot of unknowns for the first 24 hours or so, but he's actually out of the hospital, back home."
Swinney said Wesco's injury isn't like former Clemson receivers Mike Williams (neck fracture) and Justyn Ross (spine) and is confident Wesco will make a full recovery to play next season.
Wesco was taken to the hospital on Oct. 18 after what Swinney called a back injury with no fractures on a punt return in Clemson's 35-24 loss to SMU at Memorial Stadium. He was flipped upside down and appeared to land on the back of his head or neck during the third quarter. He walked off the field normally after the play.
Wesco posted on his Instagram page on Oct. 20: "Thank you to everyone sending your prayers. I really appreciate everyone's help and support! It means the world to me."
Wesco did not have a catch against SMU but entered the Week 8 game but is the team's leading receiver with 537 yards and six touchdowns on 31 catches. Tristan Smith and Cole Turner filled in for Wesco after his injury.
Wesco was among several Clemson players who got injured against SMU or missed the Week 8 ACC game, including quarterback Cade Klubnik , left tackle Tristan Leigh and left guard Collin Sadler.
