NEW YORK —Start spreading the news. It is the first day of the NHL regular season. We've made it. We survived the slog that was the June of our extensions, the July of our leftovers, and the August of our discontent. We've put up with endless Sidney Crosby trade rumors. I mean, seriously, he's not a Montreal Canadien yet?! So let's get to the Daily.
We made our best Pittsburgh Penguins team predictions, where they finish, and why. You can catch the video version, too. There were a few players claimed off waivers, including a couple of goalies, but not the goalies everyone expected; ALL of the rumor rags were flat wrong. And Connor McDavid pulled a Sidney Crosby and gave the Edmonton Oilers a massive hometown discount.
How funny, Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid will be free agents in two years. Let those rumors begin now that I've pointed it out.
…Here's my New York story. You already know that my life is closer to a Mr. Bean episode than reality. I went to a little niche joint on 6th Ave. that only serves skirt steak. I've been there before and it's absolutely amazing. So, I sat at the bar and I realized: it's me and a couple of pairs of women. Now, I'm being checked out. Then, I'm being chatted up. Huh, I'll go with it. I ordered just before the 6 p.m. deadline (to get the $35 special) and then moments later … the restaurant blew a fuse. The lights go out. The kitchen shut down. And everyone had to leave.
My new friends were headed to a show. The restaurant comped my beer and gave me a free dessert (Maple-infused chocolate cake. Hellz yeah), but everyone had to go.
So, I asked the bartender where I could go for a similar meal, and he directed me to a chic little spot on Broadway, a few blocks over. I wandered over, checked the prices on the menu outside (whew, it was within budget, kind of), sat at the bar, and then realized I was sitting next to a famous actress, who was going casual for the evening and sitting by herself. I paid no mind. A few minutes later, I looked up from the menu to catch her checking me out, then realizing…she had no time for me and retreated to her phone.
It had to be my dress watch. It really distracts from my face. The meal was awesome. And that's New York…
