According to a report from ESPN's Field Yates, the Atlanta Falcons have restructured wide receiver Darnell Mooney 's contract, freeing up $6 million in salary cap space for the 2025 season.
Mooney signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Falcons last offseason in a move that was widely questioned at the time. After posting 992 receiving yards in just 16 games, Mooney's deal now looks like a bargain for Atlanta. However, the Falcons still aren't in great shape with the salary cap.
According to Over The Cap's projections, the team was $8.7 million over the salary cap before restructuring Mooney's contract. If Yates' numbers are correct, the team just lowered its cap deficit to around $2.7 million entering the 2025 season.
While fans will be pleased to see the team free up cap space, most are more concerned with Mooney's lingering shoulder injury. The veteran wide receiver missed nearly all of training camp after going down during the first practice.
Head coach Raheem Morris said Mooney is day-to-day, but he didn't sound overly confident about his No. 2 wide receiver playing in the team's season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers .
"If he's ready to go, he's ready to go," Morris said of Mooney prior to Wednesday's practice . "If not, he won't be."
The Falcons will host the Buccaneers inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Check out the team's updated depth chart and 53-man roster heading into Week 1.
