Josh Elander was introduced as Tennessee's 26th baseball head coach in program history on Monday. He replaces Tony Vitello who resigned his position Oct. 22 to become San Francisco's manager in MLB.
Elander thanked current and former Tennessee players and coaches during his introductory press conference. He also mentioned other coaches during his baseball career, including former Tennessee assistants Randy Mazey and Bill Mosiello.
Mosiello coached at Tennessee in two stints as an assistant. He was the Vols' recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor from 2012-13. From 1993-94, Mosiello helped the Vols claim consecutive SEC championships and developed Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey .
The former Tennessee assistant returned to TCU in 2025 as the Horned Frogs' associate head coach after serving as Ohio State's head coach from 2023-24. Mosiello was an assistant coach at TCU from 2014-22 under head coach Jim Schlossnagle.
Mazey was an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1999-2002 and served as a head coach at Charleston Southern (1994-96), East Carolina (2003-05) and West Virginia (2013-24). He was an assistant coach at TCU from 2006-12 under Schlossnagle.
"To my previous coaches, I'm going to start with Jim Schlossnagle, my collegiate head coach," Elander said. "I've learned so much from you: discipline, habits and standards, what it takes to win, just to be selfless, to have incredible energy and seek excellence in everything that you do. I've always learned that from you, and I can't wait to share that with our players, as well. To Dave Van Horn, for the invitation to the SEC, to learn how to be a phenomenal head coach, but to also be an amazing family man, that is something that'll be a big part of the rest of my life as a coach. To Randy Mazey, Bill Mosiello, Todd Whitting and Pat Loter, who is no longer with us, to learn the X's and O's from from you guys, I can't wait to share the knowledge and the things that basically I had so much fun learning and getting better. The fundamentals and mastering those details with our players, that will always be a part of any program we're associated with moving forward.
"To Tony V, a lot of ways I could go with this. We made a lot of great memories. A lot of wins, a lot of running around on the road, a lot of dreaming to make this place something great, and I really believe our staff did that together. I'm so excited for you, and I can't wait to see you win a World Series. Thank you for taking a chance on me and showing me what it means to leave your soul in the game. I hope our players always feel that way, as well."
After playing at TCU from 2010-12 and being selected in the sixth round of the 2012 MLB draft by Atlanta, Elander launched his coaching career in 2016 as a student assistant with the Horned Frogs.
Elander served as Tennessee's associate head coach and recruiting coordinator from 2022-24. He was the Vols' assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2018-22.
Elander was also a volunteer assistant coach in 2017 at Arkansas under head coach Dave Van Horn.
