Despite their lofty perch in the National League East, the Phillies have needs.
They began to address them in a major way when, about 24 hours before the 6 p.m. EDT July 31 trade deadline, the Phillies obtained hard-throwing reliever Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins on July 30.
The price was steep, but likely necessary. It also certainly ranks as the biggest midseason swap made by long-time wheeler-dealer Dave Dombrowski since becoming the Phillies ' president of baseball operations before the 2021 season.
After losing two of three against the White Sox in Chicago , the Phillies are in second place in the National League East one-half game behind the Mets . They are off July 31 before the Detroit Tigers visit for a 3-game series starting Aug. 1.
Phillies trade for Twins outfielder Harrison Bader
The Phillies have done one-stop shopping with the Twins.
A day after dealing for closer Jhoan Duran from Minnesota, the Phillies acquired outfielder Harrison Bader .
Bader, a right-handed hitter, is batting .258 on the season with 12 homers and 38 RBIs.
To acquire Hader , the Phillies are sending outfielder Hendry Mendez, the organization's 12th-rated prospect, and RHP Geremy Villoria to the Twins.

Today will tell, as improving an outfield that is among the worst in the majors offensively could also fuel more dealing.
Phillies trade for pitcher Matt Manning
The Phillies made one final minor deal at the deadline, acquiring right-hander Matt Manning for a minor league outfielder. Manning will go to Class A Clearwater. To make room for Manning on the 40-man roster, RHP Devin Sweet was designated for assignment.
Who did the Phillies trade?
In exchange for Duran, the Twins received pitcher Mick Abel , now at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and High-A Jersey Shore catcher Eduardo Tait. Tait is fourth and Abel sixth on MLB.com's ranking of Phillies prospects.

Abel was 2-2 with a 5.04 ERA in six starts with the Phillies this season.
While they're good enough to compete for a division title and playoff berth, improving the roster – the bullpen specifically – has been expected for the Phillies to have a better shot at the third World Series title in their long history.
Reliever Jose Alvarado will soon return to the Phillies' bullpen from his 80-day PED suspension, but cannot pitch in the postseason. The Phillies also recently signed David Robertson for his third bullpen stint with the team. He is now pitching for Lehigh Valley before a likely Aug. 5 promotion.
In the deal for Manning, the Phils sent minor league outfielder Josueth Quinonez to Detroit.
Quinonez, 18, is hitting .287 with two home runs, 12 walks and nine strikeouts in 32 games in the Dominican Summer League. He signed out of Venezuela in January 2024.
When is MLB trade deadline?
July 31 is the final day that can happen, as Major League Baseball's trade deadline annually elicits a flurry of deals as stronger teams try to get better and those with lesser playoff hopes aim to rebuild for the future. All the movement ends at 6 p.m. ET. After that, a player must clear waivers before a trade can be completed. Any player must be in a team's roster by Aug. 31 to be eligible for the postseason.
