NFL draft outlook: Why Miami Dolphins may draft Alabama guard Tyler Booker
INDIANAPOLIS — Off the field, Alabama guard Tyler Booker came across as a pleasant, likeable fellow at the NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday morning.
On the field, Booker is a mean and nasty mauler, which happens to be what the Miami Dolphins need most with the 13th pick in t he next NFL Draft .
"My tenacity and my relentlessness makes me the best offensive lineman in this class," Booker said Saturday. "What you see on play one is what you're going to see on play eight. I'm always trying to finish you. I'm always trying to put you on your back. I'm always trying to take a little bit of your soul away play after play."
The Dolphins could lean toward a tackle capable of playing guard, such as Kelvin Banks of Texas or Armand Membou of Missouri .
Or, they could just select a player who has proven he can dominate at guard in the SEC.
"I'm able to put my weight, put my body on people, my power on people," Booker said. "And it wears down on you after a while. It's hard for people to sit in there and take going against Tyler Booker all day."
Booker says he likes to play at 330 to 335 pounds, though he could get down to 320 to 325 if it were the desire of his first NFL team.
Booker said he did not have a formal meeting with Miami in Indianapolis. Obviously that in no way eliminates the possibility of the Dolphins drafting him.
In fact, they could always invite him to Miami for a visit.
Booker really has the approach Miami needs.
"I just love the aggressiveness and tenacity of the game of football," Booker said. "Like how, how, it's, it's legal assault out there. And I love football because the brand of football that I play, I like, I make guys not love football anymore. And I do that every day, every day on by really just giving them my all and letting them know I'm not going to let up."
What is Tyler Booker's height and weight?
Tyler Booker is 6-foot-5, 325 pounds.
Where is Tyler Booker from?
Tyler Booker is from New Haven, CT.
How old is Tyler Booker?
Tyler Booker is 20 years old.
What are Tyler Bookers' strengths?
NFL scouts say Tyler Booker is massive, physical and powerful.
"Booker is one of the cleaner evaluations in the draft class," says Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com. "He has ideal size, awareness and consistency. In the pass game, he sets with a wide/firm base and easily absorbs power rushers. He keeps his hands tight and when he locks on, he wins."
"Prototypical size and girth with elite length and massive hands," says Lance Zierlein of NFL.com . "Upper-body power and hip torque to turn defenders out of the gap. Has a feel for positioning and angles to wall-off blocks in space."
"Booker is a heavyweight offensive lineman who offers a ton of punch power and physicality at the point of attack," s ays Kyle Crabbs of 33rd Team . "Teams looking for tone setters will gravitate towards his hulking frame, functional strength, and power through his hands."
What are Tyler Booker's weaknesses?
Scouts say Tyler Booker does not possess superior athleticism.
"Booker is a downhill run blocker with average explosiveness into first contact, but he utilizes his size and power to overtake defenders in the second phase of the block," says Zierlein. "He can play too far out over his toes but that’s correctable."
"Lateral mobility and range on outside run concepts leave him exposed to LBs running overtop of his climb to second-level," says Crabbs. "Struggles with consistency in passing off twists and stunts to sustain pocket. Does not have the most dynamic foot speed to mirror in isolation versus speed."
What is Tyler Booker's NFL Draft projection?
Tyler Booker is projected as a first round pick in the next NFL Draft.
Booker is rated by Jeremiah as the 13th-best player in this draft.
In recent NFL mock drafts, Booker is a consensus pick around 21st overall.
Booker is ESPN's No. 1 guard and the 33rd overall ranked player.
Will the Miami Dolphins draft Tyler Booker?
The Dolphins may very well prefer to draft a college tackle like Kelvin Banks of Texas or Armand Membou of Missouri, and move him to guard.
But if the Dolphins want to lock in a proven and aggressive and strong guard from the SEC, Booker is a very safe choice.
Booker is a leader and captain. He also has a nasty on-field temperament that should appeal to the Dolphins. They need to add butt-kickers to that offensive line.
Scouts say this guy is a hulk. The Dolphins need to add some dudes who compare favorably to The Hulk.
