Ron Harper is one of the NBA legends of the 1990s, often asked about hypothetical scenarios and matchups with modern-day teams and players. One of the most interesting questions Harp answered was how he would try to stop LeBron James .
Knowing how skilled and formidable James is, the Harper clearly had no idea how to do it. In fact, Ron isn't sure if it is even possible to stop such a dominant player like LeBron.
"Help, help, help, help (laughs)," Harp told Sportsnet, suggesting he would just ask for help in guarding Bron.
The five-time champion later followed it up with a serious answer. According to Harper, he would probably just give it all he got against James and hope for the best.
"I'm not going to let him get to the hole," he added. "Every time he puts up a shot, I'm going to put up a hand. You can't let him get easy scores. It's just going to make for a long, long game."
Stopping LeBron is easier said than done
During his playing years, Harper proved that he could play defense. In fact, Ron was recognized for his defensive contributions during his championship runs with the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers .
At the same time, it is also true that James is nearly unstoppable as an offensive player. Over the course of Bron's legendary career, no defensive player could confidently say they were able to stop the four-time MVP.
Harper says James shouldn't be compared to Jordan
Due to LeBron's dominance, fans have frequently compared him to Michael Jordan. It has been a debate for years, but even to this day, many are still arguing about who is the better player between MJ and Bron.
For Harper, who played five seasons with prime Jordan, that comparison is interesting but unfortunately invalid . The way Ron sees it, LeBron and Michael are both successful and legendary players, but they have totally different playing styles.
In a separate discussion, Harp argued that King James should be compared to the players in his category, which were the big and all-around point guards. On the other hand, Jordan should be assessed as a shooting guard and also be compared to the greatest two-guards in the history of the sport.
"They make the wrong comparison. When you look at LeBron James , you have to think of Oscar Robertson or Magic Johnson – big guards who can do everything," Harper once said to HoopsHype.
"One thing they don't give MJ credit for was his defense," he continued. "MJ was an aggressive defensive player – one of the best of all-time at that two-guard spot. He doesn't get any credit for that because everyone wants to talk about the way he scored the basketball, but MJ was a great defensive ball player too. So I don't really put LeBron in that MJ conversation. I put LeBron with those big guys."
In conclusion, Harper made a good point with his takes on James. His answers make sense, as there is really no way to determine if a great player from a past era could have stopped LeBron. The same logic applies to the MJ vs. Bron debate. However, most people still don't realize it.
