The Texas Tech football team got a big-man touchdown during its game Saturday, Sept. 6, with Skyler Gill-Howard living the linemen's dream.
Midway through the second quarter, the 6-foot-1, 290-pound defensive tackle intercepted a batted pass and went 55 yards for a touchdown . At the time, it made Texas Tech's lead over visiting Kent State 38-0.
Tech defensive tackle Lee Hunter brought quick pressure on C.J. Montes, and the Golden Flashes quarterback let go a pass toward the middle that defensive tackle A.J. Holmes batted back toward the line of scrimmage. Gill-Howard saw it, alertly grabbed it and had clear sailing toward the end zone at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Though Gill-Howard was home free, linebacker John Curry blocked the last man with a chance, Kent State running back Gavin Garcia.

Two plays before the interception-return touchdown, Garcia had turned a short pass into a 38-yard gain, the Golden Flashes' biggest play of the first half. That moved the ball to the Texas Tech 27-yard line, but edge defender Romello Height sacked Montes, and he threw the interception on the next play.
Gill-Howard started his career as a walk-on linebacker at Upper Iowa, then was a walk-on transfer to Northern Illinois, where he blossomed. Last winter, he was part of Texas Tech's highly rated transfer class.
