There's no denying that Bill Belichick is the greatest NFL coach of all-time. Belichick's first six games as a collegiate head coach, though, tell a different story.
The North Carolina Tar Heels are a disappointing 2-4 under Belichick, with their lone wins against a bad Charlotte team and FCS program Richmond. UNC is largely outmatched against Power Four competition, but showcased improvement during Friday's loss at Cal.
It's way too early to consider firing Belichick, but some people don't think so. That includes USA TODAY Sports' Paul Myerberg, who puts Belichick on his hot seat.
"There are a few reasons why Belichick is unlikely to be fired, even as North Carolina continues to search for a win against the Power Four," Myerberg wrote. "Belichick has a big buyout number, for one, and firing him after one season would also be hugely embarrassing for the school and athletics department. But the results are just abysmal: UNC has been outplayed and outcoached across the board, highlighting concerns that this challenge is too much for Belichick at this late stage of his career."
The Tar Heels welcome a ranked Virginia squad to Kenan Stadium on Saturday afternoon, then their schedule shouldget easier with matchups against Syracuse, Stanford and Wake Forest. North Carolina needs six wins to reach a bowl game , but the team needs to focus on pulling off a big upset first.
Duke and NC State await UNC to close out the season. The Blue Devils (4-3, 3-1 ACC) look like a fringe ACC contender, while the Wolfpack (4-3, 1-2 ACC) always beat the Tar Heels.
