Twelve former Florida Gators were released or waived on Sunday, the NFL's cutdown day.
The Browns waived Tyreak Sapp and Kingsley Eguakun ; the Packers waived/injured Trey Dean III ; the Panthers waived Jeremiah Moon ; the Cowboys waived Trikweze Bridges ; the Jaguars waived Amari Burney ; and the Saints waived Brien Taylor Jr.
The Chiefs released Kaiir Elam , the Dolphins released Marco Wilson , the Panthers released Kyle Trask , the Eagles released Dameon Pierce and the Commanders released Van Jefferson .
Waived players become free agents if they clear waivers, while released players become free agents immediately. The exception is when a player is waived while injured, as in the case of Dean. If Dean clears waivers, he can revert to the Packers' injured reserve.
The good news is that three of these players have already landed on practice squads. Sapp re-signed with Cleveland , Elam signed with the Chargers and Pierce ended up back with the Eagles. More moves in the coming days are possible.
Several of the other former Gators have enough NFL experience to draw interest elsewhere as teams continue adjusting their rosters before Week 1. Practice squads also give clubs another avenue to bring back players who were caught in the initial round of cuts.
