The Kentucky Wildcats have set the bar of excellence high in the NCAA. With eight NCAA titles, the best all-time winning percentage, the most all-time victories in collegiate basketball history and a legendary roster of alumni, the Wildcats have established themselves as a powerhouse in college basketball.
So, it goes without saying that expectations are always high for the Wildcats. However, this season has been anything but successful for the team. They have struggled with a 19-12 record, including an average of 10-8 in SEC play. What's even more concerning is that this disappointing season comes on the heels of a massive investment in NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals for Kentucky players.
Dick Vitale, the iconic ESPN commentator, recently expressed his disappointment with this Kentucky squad, saying they should have gotten a lot more bang for their buck.
A better roster
Dickie V. has seen it all since he began his broadcasting career in 1979. So when he voices an opinion, it typically carries a lot of weight. And the opinion he had about the Wildcats wasn't a pleasant one. Speaking during the Kentucky-Florida clash, which the Wildcats eventually lost, 84-77, Vitale pointed out how the roster just doesn't seem to mesh.
"I'm going to say this right here," Vitale uttered . "I've done several now Kentucky games. Win or lose, $22 million this team in terms of the NIL for their players. I think in $22 million, they could have put together a better roster than they did. I really do."
The team is currently led by senior guards Otega Oweh, who's averaging 18.4 points, and Denzel Aberdeen, who's averaging 13.1 points. Sophomore guard Collin Chandler is also chipping in 10.1 points per contest. However, aside from those three, no other players are scoring in double figures, indicating a glaring lack of offensive depth.
No such thing as moral victories
For a collegiate basketball program steeped in history and tradition, the Wildcats are facing an unusual predicament this season. And Vitale pointed out that the last thing they want to do is cling to moral victories rather than chase actual wins.
"I'll tell you one thing, you don't want to walk out of here thinking you got a moral victory. Moral victories don't count at this level of basketball. And you hear some of the people, 'We played them close. We played them tough,'" Vitale remarked . "The bottom line is you're Kentucky. You're Kentucky. And you've got to leave here with a win, especially at home. There are no moral victories. Come on. I don't want to hear that."
Fortunately for the Wildcats, they have found their rhythm in the SEC Tournament, winning over 16th-seeded LSU, 87-82, and the eighth-seeded seed, Missouri, 78-72, in the second round. However, the road doesn't get any tougher for them, as they will take on the top-seeded Florida Gators in the quarterfinals on Friday.
