49ers place DT CJ West on IR, sign two D-linemen to roster, practice squad originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
SANTA CLARA — The 49ers ' injury list on Wednesday continued to grow.
The placed defensive tackle CJ West , who started the 49ers' first two games of the season, on injured reserve with a bone chip in his knee, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.
West will undergo surgery but is expected to be available later in the season, Shanahan said.
West, a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had not previously appeared on the 49ers' injury report, so the news came as a surprise.
The 49ers signed defensive tackle Naquan Jones off the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad to replace West. Jones appeared in 60 games (eight starts) with the Titans, Cardinals, Chargers, Texans over the past five seasons.
West started and played 49 snaps (41%) in the 49ers' first two games of the season. He registered five tackles.
West joins a growing list of 49ers who are already on injured reserve, including wide receivers Ricky Pearsall , De'Zhaun Stribling and Christian Kirk , tight end Jake Tonges , and defensive linemen Alfred Collins and Sam Okuayinonu .
Wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and undrafted rookie defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. are expected to miss considerable time after sustaining high ankle sprains on Sunday.
Robinson and Thompson are candidates to be placed on injured reserve, which would sideline them for at least the next four games.
The 49ers signed veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks and defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko Jr. to the practice squad. The 49ers released cornerback Jakob Robinson from the team's practice squad.
Cooks is a veteran of 12 NFL seasons. He has 734 receptions for 9,811 yards and 60 touchdowns while playing for six different teams.
