The San Francisco 49ers on Monday added a new offensive lineman to the fold when they signed journeyman O-lineman Doug Kramer . They released former sixth-round pick Nick Zakelj in a corresponding move.
Kramer was a sixth-round pick of the Chicago Bears in the 2022 draft. He was one of a trio of offensive linemen who worked out for the 49ers on Friday.
Since joining the NFL Kramer has played in 18 games, including 16 for the Bears during the 2024 season. That was his last regular season NFL action. He's been with the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks as well during his career. With an opening at left guard and no frontrunners to fill it, it's not a surprise to see the 49ers adding another veteran to the mix.
Zakelj was a free agent this offseason after landing with the 49ers as a sixth-round pick in the 2022 draft. The 49ers re-signed him to a one-year deal in February. He played in 29 games with two starts after transitioning from offensive tackle to guard after he was drafted. He suffered an elbow injury that cost him a handful of practices and may have ultimately cost him his place on the 90-man roster.
There's still a chance the 49ers re-sign Zakelj to keep around as a depth piece who has experience in their offense, but it wouldn't be a surprise if they were ready to move on and find new bodies to fill their OL roster.
