28-year-old starting pitcher Alek Manoah signed with the Los Angeles Angels this past offseason. Manoah is recovering from a finger injury , however. He has yet to pitch in an MLB game for the Angels. Could that change soon? Jeff Fletcher of SoCal News Group shared an encouraging update on the pitcher ahead of the Angels’ game on Friday night against the New York Mets .
“Alek Manoah is scheduled to pitch for Rancho Cucamonga tomorrow. He said he’s up to 90 pitches,” Fletcher reported.
Manoah is likely close to returning since he is up to 90 pitches. Some pitchers return from rehab assignments after 75-80 pitches, so it would not be surprising to see Manoah make his Angels debut soon.
There was a time when Manoah was considered to be one of the better pitchers in the sport. He finished third in American League Cy Young voting in 2022 with the Toronto Blue Jays while also earning an All-Star selection that season. Injuries and underperformance have told the story for Manoah since that 2022 campaign, though.
In 2023, he turned in a 5.87 ERA across 19 outings. He was limited to five starts in 2024. The right-handed pitcher has not appeared in an MLB game since the 2024 campaign.
The Angels clearly believe Manoah still has something to offer in the big leagues. They are hopeful that he will be able to make a significant impact once he returns from injury.
For now, the Angels will focus on their game against the Mets on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 9:38 PM EST in Anaheim.
