The Pirates and Rangers met on Tuesday to start a series, and reporters asked McCutchen about his relationship with the Pirates. He was asked specifically if he saw a way that he and the team could have a relationship after he stops playing professionally.

“We’ll see,” McCutchen said, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

McCutchen was then asked as a follow up what he needed to see from Pittsburgh in order for that to happen.

“I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it,” he said.

This season in Texas, the veteran slugger is hitting at a .207 batting average. He has played 14 games for Texas, hitting one home run. The Rangers are 12-11 on the season.

Texas defeated Pittsburgh on Tuesday by a 5-1 score. Pittsburgh fell to 13-10 on the season, and is now last in the National League Central.

Before the 2026 season, the Pirates added a lot of offensive pop with the free agent signings of Marcell Ozuna and Ryan O’Hearn . The team also traded for Brandon Lowe . That was because the Bucs had a woeful offense in 2025.

McCutchen was not part of Pittsburgh’s plans to re-shape the roster. A lot of fans aren’t happy about that. It appears that McCutchen also isn’t happy about it. He was also asked by reporters Tuesday if he was disappointed by not re-signing with Pittsburgh.

“I would rather not answer that question,” McCutchen said, per DK Pittsburgh Sports. He repeated that answer when asked what the communication was like from the team during the offseason.
