Ashton Hardaway, Penny Hardaway's son, intends to transfer again from Memphis

Ashton Hardaway Memphis basketball coach Penny Hardaway's son — is not expected to return for a third season with the Tigers, the soon-to-be senior posted on Instagram March 28.

The 6-foot-8 forward intends to transfer out of the program for the second time in two years. The transfer portal window opens April 7 and closes April 21.

Ashton Hardaway, a former four-star recruit, played at Memphis as a true freshman in 2024-25. He transferred to Saint Mary's for his sophomore season, then came back as a junior.

He is the first Tigers player from Penny Hardaway's 2025-26 roster to publicly announce his decision to depart. Guard Julius Thedford and forward William Whorton are both expected to return for the 2026-27 season, according to their agent, Travis King.

Ashton Hardaway appeared in 25 games (nine starts) and averaged 5.6 points and 2.5 rebounds a game. He finished second on the team in blocked shots with 18 — one behind Thierno Sylla.

The California native's season was cut short by a calf injury that kept him sidelined for the final five games. The highest-scoring game of his collegiate career came on Jan. 21, when he dropped 18 points (in 22 minutes) in a loss at Tulsa.
