A Presidents' Trophy and Central Division win were supposed to be just the start for the Colorado Avalanche . After an impressive performance in the opening two rounds of the playoffs, the Avalanche squared off against the Vegas Golden Knights. It was intended to be another playoff series win as Colorado rolled to the Stanley Cup Final.

However, the Golden Knights didn't get the memo. Vegas went on to sweep Colorado in four games, punching its ticket to the Finals. Meanwhile, the Avs were left wondering what went wrong. Now, franchise legend and GM Joe Sakic looks to get the Avalanche back on track. At the top of the list this summer? An extension for franchise defenseman Cale Makar .
The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun shared what Makar could be looking for salary wise with his next deal.
"Makar probably won't be asking for $20 million a year," reported LeBrun. "Somewhere between $17 million and $18 million is maybe the sweet spot, depending on term."
LeBrun's statement makes sense; even though the NHL's salary cap is projected to rise once again, the Avalanche already have a couple of expensive long-term deals on its payroll. Now, Makar is set to add to the ledger.

Don't be surprised to see Makar go the route that LeBrun suggests. His last deal, a six-year, $54 million extension with a $9 million AAV, was basically a steal almost immediately after he signed it. With the salary caps projected bump over the next few years, a $17 or $18 million AAV could be a bargain, especially considering how important he is to the franchise.
Makar can sign the contract as soon as July 1, and it'll be interesting to see how soon it is announced once free agency opens.
