The Philadelphia Eagles released a behind-the-scenes look of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman working to trade up with the Dallas Cowboys to get USC wide receiver Makai Lemon at No. 20 overall in this past year’s draft. The Pittsburgh Steelers , who had the 21st pick, were on the phone with Lemon when the Eagles were considering the trade, with Philly unable to get ahold of him. The Eagles eventually made the trade anyway.
The Eagles struggled to get Lemon on the phone because the Steelers were talking to him.
“Can we not get him on the phone?!” Roseman said
“Hey, why is Philly calling me?” Lemon said.
The Eagles eventually got hold of Lemon, and the rest is history.
Roseman: “Makai, this is Howie Roseman, I’m the GM for the Philadelphia Eagles. How you doing?”
Lemon: “I’m doing good.”
Roseman: “Remember our walk on the field?’
Lemon: “Yeah, I remember that.”
Roseman: “How about we do that for a living?”
Lemon: “Hell yeah. Let’s do it.”
Roseman: “We’re picking you. You’re an Eagle. Congrats brother. Let’s do it.”
The Steelers’ draft day snafu with Lemon was also featured on ESPN’s NFL draft special , The Pick Is In , from the Cowboys’ perspective.
The Cowboys were actually the team trying to move down in the first round and pinpointed the Eagles as a top trade partner.
“Just call Howie [Roseman], Steve [Jones],” someone in the Cowboys draft war room said during ESPN’s The Pick Is In .
“I’m hoping he’ll call and say, ‘We’ll do it for it for two four’s.’ We got time,” Jones responded. “It’s not like we’re down to 20 seconds.”
However, the Cowboys ended up calling Roseman and the Eagles and they were able to strike a deal.
“Howie? Hey, this is Stephen,” Jones said. “We’d for sure do it for the two fourths. I’ll throw you a next year seven.”
“OK, we’ve got a deal,” Roseman responded.
