Blue Jays Announce Alejandro Kirk Injury News Before Dodgers Game

The Toronto Blue Jays have not had the kind of start to the 2026 MLB season they envisioned. Toronto enters Tuesday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 4-6 record and is riding a five-game losing streak. It’s a slow opening stretch that has quickly put the team on the back foot in a competitive American League East.

Injuries have played a major role in that disappointing start, and perhaps none has been more significant than the absence of Alejandro Kirk . Kirk suffered a fractured left thumb after taking a foul tip off his hand during Friday’s loss to the Chicago White Sox . The injury forced him to exit the game immediately, sidelining one of Toronto’s most reliable hitters.

Further evaluation confirmed the fracture, ruling him out and requiring surgical intervention.

As the Blue Jays prepare to face the Dodgers again on Tuesday, manager John Schneider provided a clear update on Kirk’s status. According to Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling, Kirk underwent surgery in which a screw was inserted into his fractured thumb, with an expected recovery timeline of approximately six weeks.

Kirk’s absence is a major blow to Toronto’s lineup. The two-time All-Star has been one of the team’s most consistent offensive contributors in recent years, known for his contact hitting and ability to control the strike zone.

Early in the 2026 season, he is hitting .150 batting with three hits, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored through five games before the injury. Over his career, Kirk owns a .267 batting average, along with solid on-base production and steady defensive work behind the plate, making him a key piece of the Blue Jays’ core.

Without Kirk, Toronto has had to adjust both offensively and defensively. His ability to lengthen the lineup and provide situational hitting has been noticeably missed during the team’s recent skid.

In the meantime, the Blue Jays will look to snap their losing streak when they face the Dodgers on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET, with the game expected to be broadcast on Sportsnet and MLB Network.
