Brock Purdy's best, most eye-popping stat is almost hard to believe

Never let anyone try to paint San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy as some kind of checkdown artist . One stat shows just how good he's been at pushing the ball down the field over the last three seasons.

Football analytics guru Warren Sharp posted a mind-blowing stat that illustrates Purdy's prowess on throws 10-plus yards downfield. According to Sharp, Purdy has led the NFL in completion rate on throws 10-plus yards down the field in each of the last three years.

The numbers are limited to quarterbacks with at least 250 throws of 10-plus yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

Purdy was first out of 31 such QBs in 2023. The following year he led a field of 34 qualified signal callers. Last season he was first out of 32 qualified QBs.

Perhaps the most impressive part of Purdy's completion rate on downfield throws is how efficient he has been in the deep part of the field, which is defined as 20-plus yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

Part of the reason he led the NFL in completion rate on throws 10-plus yards downfield is because of his ridiculous 52.9 percent completion rate on deep throws. He was top-10 in 2024 with a very strong 42.9 percent deep completion rate. He also shined in 2023 with a 57.9 percent completion rate on throws 20-plus yards down the field per Pro Football Focus .

Combining that with his stellar numbers in the intermediate area (10-19 yards beyond the LOS) paints a picture of an extremely efficient downfield passing quarterback. The key now will be improving his decision-making and cutting down on turnovers in those areas of the field.

We may also see that volume tick up as Christian McCaffrey enters his 30s and Mike Evans is integrated into the offense. If Purdy can remain as efficient as he's been in his career on throws 10-plus yards downfield while pushing his volume up, the 49ers could put together one of the league's most effective passing attacks.
