The Philadelphia Phillies made a notable lineup adjustment Wednesday, and Bryce Harper helped drive the decision. With Trea Turner out of the starting lineup, Harper volunteered to lead off vs. the Cincinnati Reds .
The move gives the club an aggressive answer at the top of the order. It also puts the Phillies slugger in position to receive the quickest possible plate appearances against Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Chase Burns , giving the Phillies an alternate look as they try to take the second game of the three-game set at Great American Ball Park.
Turner's lower-half issue created the opening. Philadelphia chose caution by keeping the shortstop out of the starting lineup rather than risking further discomfort.

MLB.com's Todd Zolecki took to X, formerly Twitter, before Wednesday's game and shared Don Mattingly's explanation for Harper leading off.
"I don't mind it," Mattingly said. "He comes up quicker than anyone else."
Zolecki also shared Mattingly's update on why the speedy shortstop was not in the lineup:
"Trea's been a little banged up, lower half."
The explanation from the Phillies interim manager framed the move as both practical and player-driven. Harper did not wait for the club to search for a temporary answer. Instead, he offered to take the role himself and gave the team a direct solution while Turner rests.
For Philadelphia, the timing matters. The Phillies head into Wednesday second in the National League East at 51-41, two games behind the Atlanta Braves , while managing the health of a shortstop whose speed and contact skills shape the offense.
The two-time MLB MVP leading off also changes the immediate feel of the lineup. He brings power, patience, and star presence to a spot usually built around setting the table. Just as importantly, it keeps Philadelphia from forcing another hitter into an uncomfortable role.
The Phillies did not need to force a dramatic reset. Harper simply gave Mattingly a cleaner path while Turner works through his lower-half issue.
