On Wednesday, the Chicago Bulls held an introductory press conference for their new Executive VP of Basketball Operations, Bryson Graham. He laid out his vision to turn the struggling franchise around while sitting alongside team owner Michael Reinsdorf.
For instance, he was no-holds-barred when describing the “beginning stages” of the rebuilding process, per Elias Schuster of Sports Illustrated.
“It’s going to take time,” he said. “I think the roster we’re in the developmental stage right now. I think everyone in here knows we are not where we want to be … We just want to be smart and we want to be also creative and opportunistic, right? But we’re obviously going to take our time. This is not going to be something that is rushed. This is the beginning stages. This draft is going to be the first real layer to this foundation going forward.”
Graham then emphasized the importance of the upcoming NBA Draft to compensate for the lack of big names.
“Most rebuild situations is when you don’t have star-caliber players,” Graham said. “So right now, not to say that we don’t have anyone on this roster that can get there, but until we continue to draft well, add to this mix, and add more overall talent and team identity, we are in the rebuilding phase.”
The NBA Draft is taking place in Chicago on Sunday, May 10. Chicago will have two top 15 picks after the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Los Angeles Clippers in their Play-In tournament game in April.
