Dustin May was on the receiving end of an unfortunate turn of events on Thursday during an 11-5 win for the St. Louis Cardinals over the Atlanta Braves . While May will take a win for the Cardinals any day of the week, he had a disastrous first inning of work when he allowed a three-run double on a comebacker to the mound which hit his right foot and then ricocheted all the way to right field.
As if that wasn't bad enough, the comebacker struck May hard enough to the point where he couldn't continue pitching any longer. The Cardinals decided to pull him shortly after that play, and his final stat line on the night shows five earned runs allowed against just two outs gotten.
The Cardinals did of course go on to win the game in resounding fashion, but it did not come without a steep cost. The good news is that May didn't suffer a fracture or anything of the sort, as X-rays on the injured area came back negative , as per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Nonetheless, May said that his ankle/shin area is "soft" and is in a bit of pain, according to Goold. While he shouldn't be out for too long, there's a chance that he misses his next start as the Cardinals help him through pain tolerance.
May has been a reliable hand in the Cardinals rotation this season, as he has already made 16 starts for St. Louis in 2026. While his latest start brought up his ERA all the way from 4.30 to 4.80, his peripherals suggest that he's been much better than his surface stats would indicate.
With the Cardinals right in the mix for a playoff spot in the NL, May's durability and high floor of production should make him an important piece for the team for the rest of the season.
