The Boston Red Sox remain at the bottom of the American League East in what has been an extremely disappointing season. They had their high point last weekend when they swept the New York Yankees in a four-game series at Fenway Park, but they were unable to follow up after the Yankees left town. They lost 2 of 3 games at home to the Washington Nationals and now head out on the road to the West Coast and a 3-game series with the Los Angeles Angels .
The Red Sox saw star slugger Willson Contreras get thrown out of back to back games against the Nationals. When he was called out on a check swing for a strikeout in Monday's game, Contreras pantomimed a challenge call and got thrown out by the umpire for that mis-step. Contreras was also ejected during Tuesday's game after he attempted to fight Washington pitcher Cade Cavalli after the pitcher shouted a demeaning insult at him following a strikeout.
Contreras is in his first season with the Red Sox and he has a team-leading 18 home runs and 53 runs batted in. Lance Lynn , his former teammate with the Cardinals , says the Boston first baseman has no problems playing the role of the villain on the team.
"When he's enemy No. 1, he plays the villain card very well, and he's not afraid of that villain card," Lynn said . "When he is your teammate, you like it. But when is an opponent, it's like 'here we go again.' "
Lynn pointed out that once Contreras starts to lose control of his anger, there is no turning off the emotion and sometimes it gets to be too much. However, it is clear that he cares about winning.
