The St Louis Cardinals came into Wednesday's matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers looking to salvage the series. The pitching performance they got gave them a great opportunity. Cardinals starter Dustin May brought a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but he lost it on a poor play by outfielder Bryan Torres .
May hurled seven no-hit innings at American Family Field before Garrett Mitchell broke it up in the bottom of the eighth. May gave up another hit on a Luis Rengifo bunt before he was pulled. The Cardinals went to Jojo Romero out of the bullpen, who allowed two runs to score. Those were the only two runs Milwaukee scored and the only ones they needed. The Brewers won 2-1 to finish off the sweep.
May hit Jake Bauers with a pitch in the second inning, so his perfect game bid was short-lived. Sal Frelick reached on catcher's interference in the third inning, but after that, May retired 15 consecutive Brewers hitters. But the Cardinals' offense did not pick up their pitcher enough. In those eight innings, they managed only one run on eight hits.
The Cardinals were written off in the competitive NL Central entering the season, but have been great so far this year. They entered Wednesday's game 29-24 on the season. 3.5 games behind the Brewers for first in the division. May signed a one-year deal in the offseason and had a 5.00 ERA in his first ten starts. Even after the shaky eighth inning, that will be coming down after this start.
The Brewers are now 15-4 since May 4, the best record in the National League in that stretch. Their offense has been dominant in that stretch, especially since Jackson Chourio and Christian Yelich rejoined the team off the injured list . But on Wednesday, they showed off the depth in their lineup to take the win.
The Brewers hit the road to face the Houston Astros for three games starting on Friday. The Cardinals host the struggling Chicago Cubs for three games, also starting on Friday.
