With the St. Louis Cardinals preparing for the trade deadline aside from the season at hand, the team had made some pitching moves ahead of Friday's game against the Chicago Cubs . As the Cardinals dealt with a scary-looking injury to Dustin May , the team's other moves involved one pitcher being activated and another being sent down to the minor leagues.
Besides Ryne Stanek being "activated from the paternity list," St. Louis is sending down Gordon Graceffo to the Triple-A affiliate team.
"RHP Ryne Stanek has been activated from the paternity list. RHP Gordon Graceffo has been optioned to Memphis (AAA)," the team's official account on X, formerly Twitter, wrote.
So far this season, for Graceffo, he has recorded a 3.35 ERA to go along with 18 strikeouts with one save in 40.1 innings.
The moves from the Cardinals follow after Dustin May was hit in the ankle hard by a come-backer in the bottom of the first inning in Thursday's 11-5 win over the Atlanta Braves . X-rays would come back negative, as St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol gave more insight.
"[May] wanted to keep going, but it was more of a matter of is he going to be able to go back out," Marmol said. "Once you sit, that thing's going to tighten up, and there's no chance he was going back out there, so might as well get the left-on-left matchups for that part of the lineup if that's going to be the case, so we decided to do it. Thankfully, Bruihl gets the ground ball, and then we're able to set it up the rest of the game."
At any rate, it remains to be seen when or if Graceffo comes back to the majors and the status of May in the near future.
