The St. Louis Cardinals have gotten out to a great start to the 2026 Major League Baseball season. St. Louis is currently second in the National League Central, despite parting ways with several veterans before the campaign started. It appears the team may move on from two more players ahead of this year's trade deadline.
"The Cardinals, in fact, are expected to trade reliever JoJo Romero and starter Dustin May at the trade deadline, providing they slip further back in the wild-card race," USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale wrote on Sunday. "A year from now, it may be a completely different story."
St. Louis is currently 34-28 on the season. The team has been led offensively by young players, including infielder JJ Wetherholt. The RedBirds are currently five games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first in the division, heading into Sunday.
St. Louis picked up another victory on Saturday. The Cardinals defeated division rival the Cincinnati Reds , 6-5. Young slugger Lars Nootbaar hit his first MLB home run of the season.
"It was good to be able to use him off the bench," Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said, per MLB.com. "Dude can hit, man. That was a big swing there, left on left, to do what we did. So that was a heckuva lot of fun for a lot of reasons."
St. Louis' front office has pledged to invest in its young players. So far this season, that gamble is paying off. The Cardinals parted ways with Sonny Gray , Brendan Donovan and others before the campaign began. Despite those losses, the Cardinals are very much in the mix for the postseason.
The Cardinals have won three games in a row. St. Louis plays the Reds again on Sunday.
