CLEVELAND — The Cavaliers entered this season with massive internal and external expectations heaped on them.

Then a bevy of injuries and an underachieving roster reshaped the big picture .

The Cavs appeared to be destined for another early round playoff flameout. Ownership and the front office recognized a wasted season loomed and responded with a flurry of activity leading up to the Feb. 5 trade deadline.

The most significant move brought point guard James Harden to Cleveland, where he made his Rocket Arena debut as a Cavs player in a 138-113 wire-to-wire win over the tanking Washington Wizards on Feb. 11. Fans received cut-out Harden beards attached to cardboard sticks and greeted him with a thunderous ovation during player introductions.

With Harden aboard, the Cavs (34-21) are back in this territory: NBA Finals or bust.

The feeling should be celebrated, and, for the most part, the Cavs aren't shying away from it.

After the Cavs won their fifth consecutive game and improved to 3-0 with Harden, the 11-time All-Star explained he believes the team has what's required to win an NBA championship.

"I don't know how many times I've really said that throughout the course of my career, but given the depth, given the the shooting, the athleticism, the versatility that we have, yes," Harden said.

Cavs news: Cavaliers adjust court layout after Luka Doncic injury scare

Fans display paper beards during the first home game of Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden (1) against the Washington Wizards on Feb. 11, 2026, in Cleveland.

Seven-time All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell didn't mince words about the state of the Cavs in light of Harden's arrival.

"The time is now," Mitchell said. "It basically tells you what this is.

"When ownership is aggressive, we understand that there's a belief in everybody in this locker room, so we've got to go out there and do what we've got to do."

The Cavs need to capitalize on a wide-open Eastern Conference and make a run to the Finals in June.

Cavs news: Former Cavaliers GM David Griffin praises Cleveland for James Harden trade

There are plenty of critics of the Harden trade, and skepticism is warranted about a player who has struggled in crucial playoff moments being a key to finally getting the Mitchell-led Cavs over the second-round hump.

It's also natural to question the wisdom in trading two-time All-Star point guard Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers for Harden, given Garland is 26 and Harden is 36, and the Cavs thereby chose to swap a long-term vision for a short-term answer. Harden's age aside, he has a history of seeking changes of scenery, too.

However, there is also no doubt a prosperous honeymoon period is attainable with Harden, a three-time scoring champion (2018-20) and the NBA's Most Valuable Player in the 2017-18 season with the Houston Rockets . He is still playing at a high level. He's bigger (6 feet, 5 inches compared with 6-1) and more durable than Garland. Unfortunately for Garland, he isn't reliable because he hasn't been able to stay healthy. Both of his big toes have given him problems in the past year, one leading to surgery on June 9, and he has yet to make his Clippers debut.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden (1) tries to drive past Washington Wizards guard Bub Carrington on Feb. 11, 2026, in Cleveland.

The Cavs know Mitchell would be much more likely to commit to Cleveland again with another contract extension if the team were to reach the Finals. It's a huge factor in vice president of basketball operations Koby Altman taking a swing as the trade deadline approached. Mitchell is under contract for next season but has a player option for 2027-28. The shot clock is ticking.

Although Mitchell has been to the playoffs in each of his eight completed NBA seasons, he has yet to advance past the second round. Last season, the Cavs went 64-18, grabbed the No. 1 playoff seed in the East and looked like a contender under NBA Coach of the Year Kenny Atkinson until they crumbled during a 4-1 series loss to the Indiana Pacers in Round 2.

Mitchell, 29, wants to know he's with a franchise going all out to win it all.

Harden has been to the postseason in each of his 16 completed seasons in the league, but he has only advanced to the Finals once (2012 with the Oklahoma City Thunder ). He has never won a championship.

"The first thing [Harden and I] talked about is like, man, this is gonna be his last chance to try to go ahead and get a ring, and we're all in the locker room with the same mindset," Mitchell said. "So, when you have that level of desperation from everybody up top, everybody else follows."

Cleveland Cavaliers guards Donovan Mitchell, left, and James Harden talk as they warm up before a game against the Washington Wizards on Feb. 11, 2026, in Cleveland.

Despite disappointment hanging over the Cavs for most of this season, they returned to win-now mode with the three recent trades Altman executed. Garland, wing De'Andre Hunter and point guard Lonzo Ball are gone. Harden, point guard Dennis Schroder and guard Keon Ellis have joined Cleveland's roster.

The Cavs have yet to practice with Harden, and he has yet to play with three injured teammates: forwards Evan Mobley (calf), Dean Wade (ankle) and Max Strus (offseason foot surgery).

Still, the Cavs have already received a boost from Harden. He had 23 points and eight assists on Feb. 7 in a 132-126 win at the Sacramento Kings (12-44); 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists on Feb. 9 in a 119-117 win at the Denver Nuggets (35-20); and 13 points and 11 assists in the win over the Wizards (14-39).

Harden noted he only took four shots against the Wizards — he went 1-of-4 shooting from the field — but the Cavs still managed to win by 25 points. He spoke as if he found comfort in those numbers. He sees the weapons around him. Guard Sam Merrill scored a career-high 32 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the floor (9 of 10 on 3-pointers), Mitchell contributed 30 points and center Jarrett Allen tallied 21 points and nine rebounds.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden signs autographs before a game against the Washington Wizards on Feb. 11, 2026, in Cleveland.

Harden and his new teammates entered the NBA All-Star break on a high note. Again, a honeymoon period is realistic.

"Obviously, we made a monumental trade to land James Harden ," Altman said on Feb. 5. "We think that he raises our ceiling and gives us a chance to have real playoff success."

A verdict for the Harden trade won't be read until the postseason. For now, it's clear the Cavs were compelled by a sense of urgency and took a commendable shot.
