The Los Angeles Chargers are going to look a bit different next season after another disappointing playoff exit in 2025.
While there were forced changes on the defensive side of the ball after former defensive coordinator Jesse Minter left to be the new head coach of the Baltimore Ravens , but the changes on the offensive side were self-imposed.
The Chargers fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman at the end of the season following a nightmare showing in a 16-3 loss to the New England Patriots in the Wild Card Round. Jim Harbaugh and company replaced him with Mike McDaniel , the offensive wunderkind and former Miami Dolphins head coach.
On Wednesday, at Chargers OTAs, linebacker Daiyan Henley talked about McDaniel being somewhat of a quirky individual just like his head coach, via ESPN's Kris Rhim.
"He's just a unique individual," Hemley said. "You think coach Harbaugh has strange moments, he has more."
Despite that part of his personality, which was on display throughout his time in Miami as well, Henley made sure to highlight how McDaniel rubs off on the LA players, even ones that he isn't coaching on the offense.
"I can't help but feel he loves us," Henley said, per Rhim.
McDaniel will have plenty of weapons to work with on offense next season, led by star quarterback Justin Herbert . The Los Angeles running game has struggled mightily in recent years, but that is one of the areas that McDaniel is best at coaching.
On the other side of the ball, Henley will have to carry a heavy burden as the leader of a new-look defense under new defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary. The Chargers also just inked star safety Derwin James to a huge contract extension, so he will be around to man the spine of the defense as well.
If the defense doesn't miss a beat and McDaniel helps the offense take a major step forward next season, this Chargers team should be in position to be a playoff contender and make some noise in a crowded AFC.
