The Kansas City Chiefs ' hopes of making the playoffs and earning their fourth straight Super Bowl appearance ended with a Dec. 14 home loss versus the Los Angeles Chargers last season, but the franchise's prospects for the 2026-27 NFL campaign also incurred a potentially big blow when Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. No. 15 is not like most other quarterbacks , however. He is still aiming for a Week 1 return, and the latest intel only supports his optimism.
"There's an expectation among Chiefs people that Mahomes will be fully cleared this week, and also the knowledge that when they tell him he can go, he will really go," longtime NFL reporter Albert Breer wrote for Sports Illustrated. "So the plan is to be smart with it, and make sure everyone is doing what's going to put him in the best position to be at his best from September through February, not just ready for Week 1. "
The Chiefs have no chance of attaining redemption without a healthy Mahomes. The three-time Super Bowl MVP and two-time regular season MVP will have plenty of time to find his rhythm, but he is not just concerned with shaking off injury rust.

Even before he went down, Patrick Mahomes and the KC offense were not performing to an acceptable standard. The 30-year-old completed 62.7% of his passes for 3,587 yards and 22 touchdowns while throwing 11 interceptions in 14 games last season. Chiefs Kingdom is waiting for the future Hall of Famer to reclaim his legendary form , but fans understand that such a task cannot be completed until he is ready.
When Kansas City begins training camp at the end of July, Mahomes should take a huge step toward his NFL return. Eventually, questions will shift from health to the team's renewed championship pursuit.
