Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer offered insight into why the team chose Sam Howell over Joe Milton . According to Schottenheimer, the decision came down to consistency. Howell executed the offense at a higher level throughout camp and preseason and ultimately won the competition for the backup quarterback job. Even so, Schottenheimer said the Cowboys would like to bring Milton back after he cleared waivers.
Schottenheimer is not alone in that thinking. Cowboys COO Stephen Jones echoed the sentiment during an appearance on the DLLS Cowboys podcast, saying the team hopes Milton returns. The question now is whether Milton shares that interest or prefers to explore other opportunities as a free agent. With every team passing on a waiver claim, Dallas may still offer the best path for his development. Staying with the Cowboys would allow him to continue learning in a familiar system and compete, when called upon, with a stronger supporting cast rather than joining a quarterback-needy team where his long-term value could take a hit.
