The Chicago Cubs have dealt with some concerns with their pitching staff, and they made sure to make a move to fix their depth. They recently signed Aaron Bummer to a deal, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
"The Chicago Cubs sign veteran reliever Aaron Bummer to a minor league contract after being recently released by Atlanta ," Nightengale wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Bummer was released by the Braves on May 19 after recording a 7.63 ERA across 15 1/3 innings in 19 appearances. Throughout his 10-year career, Bummer has a 3.94 ERA and 442 strikeouts over 397 innings.
This should be a good depth addition for the Cubs , as they currently have four relievers on the injured list.
It has been rough for the Cubs as they're currently on a 10-game losing streak, and it's uncertain if things will get better for them anytime soon. That has led many to wonder if they will be buyers at the trade deadline, and Jon Heyman believes they will be .
"They've been poor. They've been the worst offense in baseball over this 10 game losing streak, so that's worse than the Giants, that's worse than the Mets , that's bad, and particularly bad with runners in scoring positions, so they're going to need to do something, they're not going to be a seller, as the Mets I think are, as the Red Sox could be, the Cubs are going to be a buyer, that's why I named them my number one team for Skubal . They are missing their ace in [Cade] Horton, he is out for the year," Heyman said via Bleacher Report Walk-Off.
Despite the recent slump, the Cubs are still 29-26 and have some room to climb the NL Central. The thing is that the Cubs are going to have to turn things around sooner rather than later.
