Craig Counsell has been adamant about persevering through the ups and downs of the Cubs' 2026 MLB season .
Counsell is going through the 12th season as a head coach in the majors, his third with the Cubs . He coached them to a 92-70 record in 2025, leading them to the playoffs. They lost to the Milwaukee Brewers in the AL Divisional Series round.
Counsell intends on helping the team improve from that record and elevate their status as playoff contenders. However, this season has seen Chicago switch between wins and losses frequently. The head coach provided insight on this situation during the team's clash with St. Louis with reporter Ken Rosenthal.
"Every season presents different challenges, and this team has just been really streaky in terms of wins and losses. Part of that's probably due to some injuries that we've gone through in times and times, but it's a season and we're sitting in a pretty good spot, and you just manage it every day, and you go from there," Counsell said.
How Craig Counsell, Cubs performed against Cardinals
Craig Counsell is right to say that a long MLB season will have its ups and downs. However, what the Cubs need is positive progress, not stagnant results.
It didn't help that they suffered a 3-0 shutout loss to the Cardinals. St. Louis landed its runs during the first, third and eighth innings. Chicago only mustered up five hits in its 30 at-bats, showing how the opposing visitors kept the hosts quiet and prevented them from getting on the scoreboard.
Chicago fell to a 49-40 record on the season, sitting at second place in the NL Central Division standings. They are above the Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates while trailing the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Cubs will try to conclude their series against the Cardinals with a win. The series finale will commence on July 5 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
